Canine babesiosis is a tick-borne disease caused by several Babesia spp. which have different susceptebility to anti-protozoal drugs. Atovaquone have anti-protozoal property that target the apicoplast, a relict plastid found in protozoa, and exert a delayed death effect. It is an anti-infective medicine. It is used to prevent and to treat Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP). It is used to treat certain protozoal parasitic infections in dog or cats Its mechanism of action is via inhibition of the parasite's mitochondrial electron transport. Indications Atocia is used in treatment of Babesia gibsoni in dogs. Babesia is a protozoal parasite of mammalian red blood cells. Administration Instructions Atocia comes as a liquid suspension. Before using, shake the bottle gently. To help with the absorption of this drug, give it with food that is high in fat.
